Local Tribes & Environment
They are often referred to as 'Saviours of Nature'. Using only as much as they need - be it livestock, wood, natural food. Though located in smaller numbers across remote parts of India, their contribution is invaluable. Changpas for instance in the Chumathang Plateau of Ladakh live tents made of sheep wool, use grazing fields at higher altitude during Summer & lower plains in winter, shear the Changra goats in summer for Pashmina wool. The tribes of North East numbering over 18 make invaluable contributions in sustainable farming practices, water conservation, textile weaving in winter, celebrating festivals with a flair for promoting tradition, culture & customs & finally living harmoniously. Be it the Angs of Nagaland producing homemade Rice Beer or local tribes creating carbon credits in Khasi Hills by shifting cultivation
or banning use of calcium carbide in ripening fruits; tribes of North East play a remarkable role in environmental conservation with sustainable practices.
