The Hornbill Festival is a ten-day annual event in Nagaland, India, held from December 1st to 10th, that celebrates the state's rich cultural heritage, traditions, and unity among its diverse tribes. It features cultural performances, tribal morungs (decorated huts), indigenous games, and local cuisine. The festival, often called the "Festival of Festivals," is organized by the Nagaland state government to promote and showcase the unique cultural identity of the Naga people. Key aspects of the festival Cultural Performances: Visitors can see a variety of traditional dances, folk music, and war dances performed by different Naga tribes. Tribal Morungs: The festival showcases the distinct architectural styles of 17 Naga tribes. These decorated huts, called morungs, serve as interactive spaces where visitors can learn directly from locals about their traditions and lifestyle. Indigenous Games and Sports: The festival includes demonstrations of traditional skills, such as Naga wrestling, indigenous archery, and mock battles. Arts and Handicrafts: Attendees can find and purchase a wide range of handcrafted items, including handwoven shawls, bamboo products, and tribal jewelry. Local Cuisine: The festival also features a variety of local food and food stalls where visitors can try authentic Nagaland cuisine. Location: The festival is held at the Kisama Heritage Village, located about 12 km from Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. Purpose: The event was conceptualized in 2000 to revive, protect, and promote the rich heritage of the Naga people.
